Executive Summary
Winter Springs, Fla. – Close competition between potential candidates for US President in 2016 and State-wide political match-ups highlight a recent current events poll completed in the State of Iowa. Human Events and Gravis Marketing completed a poll on September 30th, 2014 surveying 522 registered voters in Iowa regarding statewide candidates and potential matchups. The Poll was completed using Gravis Marketing IVR Technology, weighted by historical voting demographics and carries a margin of error of 4%.
Of the 522 individuals polled in the Gravis Marketing survey, 35 percent represented themselves as ‘independent’ voters, while 32 percent equally indicated they were Republican or Democrat.
Federal Polling Results
President Obama’s approval rating continues to drop as indicated by the first question in the Gravis Marketing / Human Events poll. When asked whether the Iowa voters approve or disapprove of President Obama’s job performance, 55% indicted they disapprove, 36% approve and 10% remain unsure.
The voters in Iowa were then asked about potential match-ups to replace the President’s position which will be vacated in 2016. “If the election for President was held today and the candidates were Republican Jeb Bush and Democrat Hillary Clinton, whom would you vote for?” Both candidates received 41% support, while 18% were undecided at the time of the Gravis Poll. The voters were then asked, “If the election for President were held today and the candidates were Republican Paul Ryan and Democrat Hillary Clinton, whom would you vote for?” Interesting enough, both potential candidates were tied at 44% and only 13% remain undecided at this point.
State of Iowa Politics
The 522 Iowa voters were then asked about their choice between Republican Joni Ernst and Democrat Bruce Braley for the Senate seat, and whom they would support in the upcoming November election. 50 percent of those polled would currently support Republican Joni Ernst, 41 would cast a vote for Democrat Bruce Braley while only 10 percent remain undecided at this moment.
When asked, “If the election for Governor was held today and the candidates were Republican Terry Branstad and Democrat Jack Hatch, whom would you vote for;” Iowa voters were fairly confident in their choice. 51 percent stated they would cast a vote for Republican Terry Branstad, 43 would support Democrat Jack Hatch, while only 6 percent were unsure.
Other questions asked in the Gravis / Human Events poll included a hotly contested battle for State of Iowa Secretary of State. “If the election for Secretary of State was held today and the candidates were Republican Paul Pate and Democrat Brad Anderson, whom would you vote for?” At the time of the poll, both candidates received an equal supporting of 40 percent, while 20 percent of those polled remain undecided with less than a month remaining. For State Treasurer, Democrat Mike Fitzgerald holds a large lead of 58 percent to 32 percent over Republican candidate Sam Clovis.
