Florida Political Poll Rick Scott Holds Slight Lead

Executive Summary

Human Events-Gravis Marketing conducted a political poll of 907 registered voters in Florida by automated calls to landlines a between 4/23/14 and 4/25/14 regarding support for the proposed Constitutional Amendment legalizing medical marijuana which is on the November 2014 ballot and the upcoming Gubernatorial and Attorney General Elections.  The results have a margin of error of ±3.

Governor Political Poll

Respondents taking the phone survey revealed that the race between Rick Scott and Charlie Crist remains relatively close with 44% of polled voters stating that if the election were held today that they would vote for Rick Scott and 43% stating they would cast their vote for Charlie Crist, 5% of voters revealed they would vote for Adrian Wyllie while 9% expressed they were unsure about their vote. Unsure voters who could affect the gap between Crist and Scott as the election draws closer could certainly decide this race.  A similar poll was conducted in February 2014 in that poll, 47% of those polled stated that if the election were held today that they would vote for Charlie Crist and 43% stating they would cast their vote for Rick Scott. The current results represent gains made by Rick Scott overcoming 4-point deficit in a three-month period.   According to Cherie Bereta Hymel of Gravis Marketing, “The political poll is good news for Governor Scott, he has spent a fortune recently on television ads and in numerous polls, you see Scott closing in on Crist, this poll is the first poll that shows Scott ahead.”

 

Attorney General Poll Numbers

When surveyed about the Attorney General race, voters indicated that if the election for Attorney general were held today, 45% would vote for Pam Bondi, while 38% stated they would vote for Perry Thurston and only 7% stated they would cast a vote for Bill Wohlsifer. With George Sheldon added to the questionnaire in pace of Perry Thurston Bondi’s support only diminished to 45% while 36% of voters expressed support for George Sheldon. Support for Wohlifser’s remained at 7% while unsure voters increased from 11% to 12%. The main take away from these data indicate that the Attorney General’s race will likely be a three-way contest with Bondi holding a cushion over Thurston and Sheldon with a significant amount of unsure voters who could potentially tighten up the race. These current results remain on par with data collected in February 2014.

Medical Marijuana Opinion Poll

These data indicate a modest majority of support for the amendment with a notable amount of uncertainty. Support for the amendment appears to diminish as the issue of legality for medical purposes touches on more permissive and unregulated uses beyond the language of the Amendment.

When polled regarding their broad support for the amendment, a modest majority, 60% of the surveyed voters, indicated general support for the Amendment while 32% expressed opposition and 8% indicated they were unsure of their position. Cherie Bereta Hymel, states, “Medical Marijuana is at it’s magic number of 60% I believe getting 60% is difficult but without opposition, medical marijuana passes with 65-66%, the question is does it translate to votes for Crist.”   When compared to poll results collected in February 2014, these data reflect a slight uptick in support for the amendment. In the previous poll, 57% of the surveyed voters indicated general support for the Medical Marijuana Amendment while 31% expressed opposition and 11% indicated they were unsure of their position.  Previous Medical Marijuana opinion poll.

Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions

BALLOT SUMMARY: Allows the medical use of marijuana for individuals with debilitating diseases as determined by a licensed Florida physician. Allows caregivers to assist patients’ medical use of marijuana. The Department of Health shall register and regulate centers that produce and distribute marijuana for medical purposes and shall issue identification cards to patients and caregivers. Applies only to Florida law. Does not authorize violations of federal law or any non-medical use, possession or production of marijuana.
